A village sitting among the palm trees on the banks of the River Nile somewhere between Aswan and Luxor. The Nile has always been the lifeblood of Egypt as it passes through the Sahara Desert. The area immediately by the riverbanks is green and fertile, but just behind are the desert sands. Flooding has now been controlled by the nearby Aswan Dam which also provides electricity to the region. The image has an oil pastel finish - developed from my original photograph.

The area either side of the river is rich farmland but just behind is arid desert! In this scene we can also see fishermen in their small boats reaping their own harvest. The image is finished with a chalk pastel effect developed from my original photograph.

A rather loaded felucca being pulled along the shoreline of one of the islands in the River Nile between Aswan and Luxor. These islands are very fertile agricultural land in contrast to the surrounding desert. Very possibly the men in the boat are being ferried to work! Fish

One of the islands along the River Nile between Aswan and Luxor. The luish green grass on these islands supports cattle which are farmed here. They reach the islands by boat or by swimming. The area immediately on and around the Nile is rich farmland but just a short distance away is inhospitable desert. The Nile has been the lifeblood of Egypt for thousands of years enabling the abcient civilisation to flourish. This image has been given a pastel finish - developed from my original photograph.

It is a member of the Latidae family and is native to most river basins in Africa, including the Nile River Basin. It is a fierce predator that dominates its surroundings, it feeds on fish (including its own species), crustaceans, molluscs, and insects It is a threatened fish due to over harvesting. Its maximum length is 200 cm (about 79 inches) and has a maximum published weight of 200.0 kg (441 pounds).

Cairo, Egypt’s capital, is set on the Nile River. The largest city in the Middle East and the third largest city in Africa. Stunningly beautiful and mysterious city.

It is a member of the Cichlid family and is native to the northern half of Africa and the Levante area, including Palestine, and Lebanon.

The River Nile is more than a highway for river cruise boats - it really is the lifeblood of the valley. The people living in villages along its banks use it daily for washing themselves, their clothes and their household textiles. To the children of course it's a playground too! Much safer these days as since the constuction of the Aswan Dam there are no crocodiles here - they are all below the dam. The photograph has been given a chalk pastel finish.

Looking across the River Nile at the Aswan cataracts - just above the Aswan Dam. Here the river flows through outcrops of hard rock such as granite and was at one time an impediment to river travel at this point. Now boats terminate at Aswan and navigation restarts below the dam. On the hillside is the Aga Khan Mausoleum built to hold the tomb of Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah (1877 - 1957), commissioned by his wife. The image is finished as a pastel drawing
