The Date clan (伊達) is a Japanese samurai kin group founded in the early Kamakura period, the family took its name from the Date district (now Fukushima Prefecture), north of Japan. This is the kamon (family crest) of the Date clan, “Take ni Suzume”, featuring two sparrows surrounded by bamboo . Below the crest is “Date” in kanji.

The Azai clan (浅井) was a line of daimyos during Japan’s Sengoku jidai that was based in Omi Province (present day Shiga Prefecture). The Azai clan, along with the Asakura clan, opposed Oda Nobunaga in the late 16th century. They were defeated by him at the Battle of Anegawa in 1570, and all but eliminated when their home castle, Odani Castle, was taken three years later. The Ishida clan (石田) was a Japanese samurai clan who ruled the Omi province. The clan is known for Ishida Mitsunari, one of the Go-Bugyo (五奉行) or Five Commissioners under the Toyotomi Shogunate. The Shibata clan (柴田) was a Japanese clan that had originated during the Heian period (12th century) of Japan. The Shibata clan of Echigo province were notably related to that of the Shibata clan of Owari province. The Shibata clan of Echigo were descended from Sasaki Moritsuna, a supporter of Minamoto no Yoritomo and a son of Sasaki Hideyoshi. The Shibata later became retainers of the Nagao clan, which was under control by the famed Uesugi Kenshin. After Shibata Shigeie died during the year of 1587, the Shibata clan attempted to break away from the Uesugi. After this, the clan of Echigo became extinct, never to be seen again. The Late Hojo clan (後北条), or Odawara Hojo was one of the most powerful warrior clans in Japan in the Sengoku period and held domains primarily in the Kantō region, but they were not related to the earlier Hojo clan who controlled the hereditary title of shikken of the Kamakura shogunate. This is the kamon (family crest) of the Hojo clan, Mitsuuroko (三つ鱗) or “three scales”. Below the crest is “Hojo” in kanji.

The Toyotomi clan (豊臣) was a Japanese clan that ruled over Japan before the Edo period, the most influential figure within the Toyotomi was Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the three “unifiers of Japan”, the clan dissolved after the son of Hideyoshi, Toyotomi hideyori commit seppuku adter defeated by Tokugawa Ieyasu in siege of Osaka. Minamoto (源) was one of the surnames bestowed by the Emperors of Japan upon members of the imperial family who were excluded from the line of succession and demoted into the ranks of the nobility. The practice was most prevalent during the Heian period (794–1185 AD), although its last occurrence was during the Sengoku period. The Minamoto were one of four great clans that dominated Japanese politics during the Heian period — the other three were the Fujiwara, the Taira, and the Tachibana. This is the kamon (family crest) of the Minamoto clan, Sasa Rindo (笹竜胆) or “Gentiana flowers upon bamboo”. Below the crest is “Minamoto” in kanji.

The Tachibana clan (立花) was a Japanese clan of daimyo during Japan’s Sengoku and Edo periods. Originally based in Tachibana castle in Kyūshū, the family’s holdings were moved to the Yanagawa Domain in the far north-east of Honshū in the Edo period. The clan, which bore no direct relation to the Tachibana clan of the Heian period, originated with Otomo Sadatoshi, who took on the name and assigned it to the family of Otomo vassals who held Tachibana castle. For a time, the Tachibana served as loyal retainers under the Otomo clan, regularly battling the Shimazu, rivals to the Otomo. The Shimazu clan were the lords of Satsuma province in south Kyusu for nearly 700 years, from the 1180s through the 1870s, commanding considerable power and semi-independence within their domain. This is the kamon (family crest) of the Shimazu clan, the Jyuji (cross), there are many meanings for this mark; one says that they are a set of chopsticks that was used to celebrate to take the field, the other says that the mark represents two dragons, or it is simply a symbol of Christianity. The Kuroda clan (黒田) was a Japanese samurai clan which came to prominence during the Sengoku period. In the 16th century, the Kuroda clan was located in Harima Province. Under the headship of Kuroda Yoshitaka, the clan served the Oda and later Toyotomi clans. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Kuroda Yoshitaka and his son Nagamasa supported Ieyasu in combat against Mitsunari Western Army, and were rewarded for their service with a transfer to the Fukuoka Domain. This is the kamon (family crest) of the Kuroda clan, Kuroda Fuji tomoe (黒田藤巴) or “Kuroda wisteria tomoe”. Below the crest is “Kuroda” in kanji.

The Taira clan (平) was a major Japanese clan of samurai. In reference to Japanese history, along with Minamoto, Taira was a hereditary clan name bestowed by the emperors of the Heian period to certain ex-members of the imperial family when they became subjects. The Taira clan is often referred to as Heishi (平氏) or Heike (平家), using the character’s Chinese reading hei. The Taira were one of four great clans that dominated Japanese politics during the Heian period — the other three were the Minamoto, the Fujiwara, and the Tachibana.
