Sanderling Pillows

Portuguese coast most famous friends, the sanderlings, that go up and down the waves, looking for a little snack.

When you're this small and round, even watching you eat is a cute experience! This Sanderling was foraging on the shoreline with 20 others of its kind, enjoying seaside dining on the remnants of clams that had been already picked apart by gulls.

It was a stormy February day with a strong wind which was whipping up the sea and this little Sanderling was resting on the post of a groyne when it would normally be down at the water's edge looking for food. The sanderling is a small wading bird and one of the world’s most widespread shorebirds. In fall and winter you can find them on nearly all temperate and tropical sandy beaches throughout the world.

A tiny shorebird often seen poking along Metro Vancouver winter shores in medium- to large-sized flocks, Sanderlings are uncommonly bold around humans, going about their business of gathering food while patently ignoring us.

Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds that can be easily found at Vancouver beaches in the coldest winter months.

This cute shore bird was captured off of an Atlantic coast beach back last winter. I believe it is a sanderling, but it could be a sandpiper--they are very close in color and markings. Anyway, it was one of a flock, all scrambling by the water's edge, looking for a tiny meal and impervious to to the cold water.

The shorebirds that run up and down the beach are adorable. And so are the little crabs! Why not put them together?
