Ink, gouache and digital. ‘Karate Sensei’ portrays a martial arts master performing a high side-kick. The word ‘sensei’ is an honorific term used in Japan and China (xiansheng). Its literal translation is ‘one who comes before’ and it is generally used to refer to an accomplished teacher.

Shotokan Karate belongs to the 4 major schools in Japan (along with Goju-Ryu, Shito-Ryu and Wado-Ryu). Its founder was Gichin Funakoshi, whose students chose his writer pseudonym "Shoto" for the name of his dojo.
