A sudden snow squall erupted, with the surrounding wilderness immediately engulfed in a shower of snowflakes, rendering the landscape like a giant snowglobe. A distinctive evergreen tree lent its quirky shape to this moody scene.

This image, originally captured on film in early 1987 in southwestern Ontario, depicts the perished remains of a couple of bull rushes that had flourished during the previous summer. The roadside ditch in which they had grown was now snow-filled, isolating these bull rushes in a white wilderness. All the while the snow squall continued with strong winds and bitingly cold wind chills. What a day for photography.

We had tried to drive up to our cottage that day but had to turn around as the snow squall developed. Visibility was significantly reduced, creating an otherworldly experience, something that deserved to be captured. I've always loved the look of trees in winter; their summer drapery of leaves gone to reveal their skeletal structure. But on this day, as the snow blew and stuck to the windward surfaces, it artistically defined this tree, almost as if the darkness of the tree had been etched from a white canvas.
