Staphylococcus bacteria. Colour transmission electron micrograph of sectioned Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. They are Gram-positive coccal (spherical) bacteria. At centre a bacterium in cross section is seen with its thick cell wall (green). Above and below this bacterium are obliquely sectioned bacteria showing the irregular surface of the bacterial cell walls. Staphylococcus aureus commonly occurs on healthy human skin and mucous membranes, such as the lining of the mouth. It may, however, become pathogenic. False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a colony of Staphylococcus aureus, a species of spherical, Gram positive, non-motile bacteria. Many species of Staphylococcus cause disease in man through secretion of exotoxins: S. aureus is commonly present on skin and mucous membranes and causes boils and internal abscesses, and is the commonest cause of pyogenic (pus-forming) infections in man. Other species produce toxins causing food poisoning. Staphylococcal enteritis (severe & potentially fatal) results from use of broad-spectrum antibiotics which allows S. aureus to proliferate in the intestines. Magnification: X 12,000 at 35mm size.
