Surrounded by moorland heather in Summer, Castleton village lies in the valley of the River Esk on the North York Moors, close to Danby, The was a medieval castle in the village which probably accounts for its name. The picture was taken from the edge of Commondale Moor when the surrounding moorland heather was in full bloom.

Pink Heather On The Yorkshire Moors It takes a special kind of plant to thrive in moorland areas, where the weather is often cold, wet and windy. Heather – an evergreen shrub with twiggy stems – covers our open moorland. Usually lots of heather plants grow together, forming a thick, bushy carpet, sometimes up to half a metre tall. This helps the plant to survive strong winds. Heather also has tiny, narrow leaves shaped like the needles on a Christmas tree, which stop the plant from losing too much water as the winds blow across the moors. Nectar from heather flowers makes excellent honey, and local beekeepers often bring their hives on to the moors in late-summer when the heather comes into bloom. Drop me a message if you wou...

Blooming heather stretching out across the moorland in Westerdale on the North York Moors during at the begining of Autumn. The stone wall leads across moorland fields to a footpath across the moors known as the Esk Valley Walk. Most of the common heather is also referred to as ling as was, in the past, burnt on the fires of moorland inhabitants. Many of the Yorkshire moors are now grouse moors which attract many to the field sport of grouse shooting.

There is an ancient tradition of erecting crosses in remote locations across the moorland, sometimes used a way markers for those travelling across the moors on foot. At the end of Summer approaching Autumn the heather covered moorland comes into its own with splashes of purple and red heather across the landscape. The North Yorkshire Moors are famed for it's displays of heather, shown here with a lone tree on the moorland near the Yorkshire towns of Hawnby and Helmsley on the North York Moors.

Hutton Le Hole, Yorkshire, UK What a stunning find, Hutton-le-Hole is a small village and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England, about 7 miles north-west of Pickering. It is a popular scenic village within the North York Moors National Park. Sheep roam the streets at will. There are many hikes around this area and all are amazing with views to die for, so get your boots and ruck sack on and head out in any direction you please. Weighing more than 7 tons, the piece of sandstone rock was originally deposited in the ice age on Spaunton Moor. It was transported and erected on Danby High Moor to mark the millennium and has a carving AD MM on the reverse. After the stone was errected it was discovered that some of the indentations on the stone are actually dinosaur footprints. It certainly doesn't look out of place amongst the moorland heather.
