Not what you would usually associate with a canal
This is 'Royal Iris of The Mersey' one of two Mersey Ferries making the return journey from Salford Quays, down the Manchester Ship Canal. Picture taken at the point where the canal joins the River Mersey entering in to the Mersey Estuary.
Royal Iris was built in 1959 and is owned by Merseytravel and operated by Mersey Ferries.

Looking over the reflecting pool at the Capitol Building in Washington DC
Construction of the Capitol Building began in 1793 under the watchful eyes of George Washington. Now home to the House of Representatives and The Senate
The Dome is made from cast iron and weighs 8.9 million pounds.
Well worth a visit ... The Visitor Center is the newest addition to this historic complex. At nearly 580,000 square feet, the underground Visitor Center is approximately three quarters of the size of the Capitol itself.

Genuinely unsure how this will go down!
It's a pair of shower heads, yes. But it's a pair of shower heads in the Cell Block on Alcatraz. The penitentiary itself operated until March 1963, after having 1,576 prisoners pass through

These appear to be quite hardy little things. The part of the field where this grows had a stretch of drain put in a couple of years ago and whilst the ground has dried and is much more solid, this has kept coming back.
There are several species of Marsh Orchid. If you happen to know what it is, please let me know and I shall amend the title.

We have an opening swing bridge, disused railway bridge and in the distance the Thelwall Viaduct. Each crossing the Manchester Ship Canal on the way to the River Mersey.
Maybe next time with a blue sky,
A solitary snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria Meleagris) raises its head above the dewy grass on a clear April morning. Not often in the North West of England, do you also get the benefit of a clear blue sky in April. Hopefully it will be back in the spring.

These two lilies don't always both open up on the same day. Today for instance the one in the background has remained closed, the day before this one was taken, the one in the foreground had remained closed. So conditions must have been ideal for both to open up when this was taken yesterday. There is a third. We shall have to wait and see what happens there.
