It was really tricky photographing these little creatures in the wild; they are so small and so fast. When we were there they were harvesting food and running off with great mouthsfull of grass to store up food for the winter. Lammergeier Valley, South Gobi, Mongolia. Meriones unguiculatus, the Mongolian jird or Mongolian gerbil is a rodent belonging to subfamily Gerbillinae. It is the most widely known species of the gerbil subfamily, and is the usual gerbil species to be kept as a pet or experimental animal, when it is known as the domesticated gerbil. Its habitat is mainly semideserts and steppes. Soil on the steppes is sandy and is covered with grasses, herbs, and shrubs. The steppes have cool, dry winters and hot summers. The temp...

A huge tabular iceberg protrudes from the sea ice about the height of a 10 story building, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The light during the night when there is 24 hour sunlight is very special providing dramatic lighting and colour on the sea ice and in the clouds. It is like having dusk, dawn, sunrise and sunset all rolled into one. If the sun is behind clouds the colour is often muted and subtle. Canon EOS, zoom lens.

Expeditioners walking on the fast ice between the ramparts of the Drygalski Ice Tongue. The Drygalski Ice Tongue (an extension of the Davide Glacier) extends into the sea for about 80 kilometres. The Drygalski Ice Tongue forms the southern edge of Terra Nova Bay in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Glaciers are formed when pieces of the ice tongue break off its far end due to sea and wind erosion. Much of the sea on the Northern side of the tongue is open in summer, rather than ice as the massive tongue, which rises to about 10 stories high above the water, offers a degree of protection from the worst of the weather. Pair of mature white lions. The white lion is occasionally found in wildlife reserves in South Africa and is a rare colour mutation of the Kruger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri). It has been perpetuated by selective breeding in zoos around the world. White lions are not yet a separate subspecies and they have been said to be indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa for centuries, although the earliest recorded sighting in this region was 1938. Regarded as divine by locals, white lions first came to public attention in the 1970s in Chris McBride’s book “The White Lions of Timbavati”. Up until 2009, when the first pride of white lions was reintroduced to the wild, it was widely believed that the white lion could not su...

(4662 views at 9 September 2015) The gentoo penguin is easily recognized by the wide white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of its head and its bright orange-red bill. They have orange webbed feet and a fairly long tail - the most prominent tail of all penguins. Chicks have grey backs with white fronts. As the Gentoo penguin waddles along on land, its tail sticks out behind, sweeping from side to side, hence the scientific name Pygoscelis, which means "rump-tailed". Gentoos breed on many sub-Antarctic islands. The mai...

Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. A member of the Asteraceae or Compositae, dicotyledonous plants, related species include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum and zinnia. There are at least 36 species of dahlia, with hybrids commonly grown as garden plants. Flower forms are variable, with one head per stem; these can be as small as 2 in (5.1 cm) in diameter or up to 1 ft (30 cm) ("dinner plate"). This great variety results from dahlias being octoploids—that is, they have eight sets of homologous chromosomes, whereas most plants have onl...
