A modernization of steam roller from the Providence drawing. This is more of a logo, the kind of thing the team might have used if they had continued to modern times.

Providence Steam Roller Modern
Providence had a very odd logo that I've never truly been able to track the origin of. A weird dog / dog man that is unrelated to steam rollers or the town of providence, it's so odd that it defies reinvention. This drawing was in a program between Providence and Pottsville, back when both fielded NFL teams. The color fill was not a part of the original cartoon but both orange and gray were team colors.

This design is here because a client stiffed us at work. He wanted a logo and a shirt using an illustration featuring his truck. After making many requested changes to the artwork he was finally happy. Then he disappeared. I've done some adjustments, adding a background and playing with the colors. When my seven year old saw this he immediately said that he wanted a shirt of just the green one in the corner. If you want just one of the squares on a whole shirt you can contact me and I'll upload it.

The Los Angles Dons were founded in 1946 as a member of the AAFC along with the Cleveland Browns and the San Fransisco 49ers. They had a number of celebrity shareholders and actually out drew the Los Angles Rams during their time. The logo is taken from the wordmark used by the team.

This is a natural color version of the osprey used by the Miami Seahawks of the AAFC. When recreating the Seahawks logo I tried a number of color variations. This one follows the natural colors of the osprey and I like how it looks.

Seahawks Football
The Miami Seahawks were founded in 1946 as a member of the AAFC along with the Cleveland Browns and the San Fransisco 49ers. They were given a late start and had a number of factors come against them. Because the AAFC scheduled home games for warm weather teams late in the season by the time the Seahawks played their second home game it was obvious they would not make the playoffs and attendance suffered.

A logo design for the AAFC version of the Buffalo Bisons / Bills. The Buffalo Bison were founded in 1946 as a member of the AAFC along with the Cleveland Browns and the San Fransisco 49ers. The team was re-named for Buffalo Bill Cody after their second season. This artwork is on two of the pieces used by the team for promotions. The team colors were a dark blue and silver. The team was in line to join the NFL but the team from Baltimore was chosen instead. That version of the Baltimore Colts folded rather fast once they had joined the NFL. The legacy of the AAFC team inspired the creation of the current Buffalo Bills.

The Brooklyn Dodgers were founded in 1946 as a member of the AAFC along with the Cleveland Browns and the San Fransisco 49ers. Confusingly, there was an NFL team named the Brooklyn Dodgers that went defunct in 1945. The design was one I found going thru a sketchbook. I had intended on using it the first time I worked on a modernized Brooklyn Dodgers team uniform and hadn't gotten around to it at the time. Now, with a better handle on Flexisign, I decided to work thru it. The kid's long sleeve default is kelly green because my son wanted it to be. Green is his favorite color and if there's one of my own designs I order, this might be it.

They were a two time NFL champion and featured several NFL Hall of Famers. The team still holds the record for most wins without a loss, compiled over three seasons.

Ernie Nevers was one of the early stars of the NFL. He was a five time All Pro, a member of the all-decade team for the 1920's and holder of the NFL record for most points scored in a single game by one player. He is tied with Alvin Kamera and Gale Sayers for most touchdowns in a single game and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. During the 1920's he was the star player and (for one year) coach of the Duluth Eskimos, a traveling football team. (At the time some teams always or almost always played on the road.) Nevers stardom was enough to guarantee large ticket sales.

The Providence Steamroller (or Steamrollers) was an NFL team from 1924 to 1931. They were the last currently defunct team to win an NFL championship in 1928. They had a very logo that's a thin drawing of a dog or dog/man that defies understanding. Assuming the team had continued to play they would have likely gone with a logo closer related to their name at some point. The red stripe is there as a tribute to the tongue sticking out on the original logo.

The text from this image is taken from the letterhead used by the Akron Pros. This particular letterhead was used to record the minutes of the very first meeting of the American Professional Football Association, which would change it's name to the National Football League. The player comes from a 1921 program between the Buffalo All Americans and the Akron Pros.

The Staten Island Stapletons, or Stapes, were an NFL team from 1929 to 1932. This (as far as I know) an authentic design for a team patch. The team was done in by the small size of their home stadium. The stadium did have one bonus though. The team owner also owned a speakeasy joined to the stadium and after home games the players would go there to share a drink with the fans.

The Buffalo All Americans were one of the founding teams of the NFL. This is a modern version of the team's logo, or more accurately, a version of the image found on their letterhead. The team's colors were black, orange and white. I did a few versions before hitting on this one. It's clean and modern, but also pulls from the vintage image. They were very good early on, with a legitimate claim on the first two championships of the NFL.

The New York Bulldogs were part of a series of team names used by Ted Collins in an effort to find the right one. They were the Boston Yanks, The Yanks, the New York Bulldogs and the New York Yanks and Dallas Texans. The last iteration of the team eventually became the founding pieces of the Baltimore Colts, who became NFL: Champions in 1958. The logo is original, although the colors have been changed to fit the logo and to provide a more modern color scheme.

I didn't care for the new LA Rams logo when it came out in 2020. It seemed better suited as a twitter logo than the logo for an NFL team. So I worked through the issues I had with the design to come up with this. It maintains the horn connection to the new wordmark but with a much more expressive face.

The Milwaukee Badgers were an NFL team from 1922 to 1926. They were involved in the 1925 NFL Championship controversy. The artwork is based on what I could find of their logo. It seems more modern than the 1920's but I've never found evidence that it wasn't authentic. The artwork was done as part of series looking at Defunct NFL teams and what their uniforms and logos would have looked like today.

Jim Thorpe has been called the greatest athlete of the first part of the twentieth century. He was an Olympic champion a MLB pitcher and a HOF NFL running back. He played college football against WWII generals and was the first president (commissioner) of the NFL. This is my colorized version of a photo from 1912, now in the Library of Congress.
