Fab Feminist PSA Week 10: It is our responsibility to engage with the problems that do not impact us personally *AND* to follow the lead of those who are impacted.⁠

Just a little reminder that... If it's not intersectional, it's NOT Feminism.

It can be so tempting to lean into the feeling of exhaustion, the sense that change is impossible, the fear that despite our best efforts, monsters like Donald Trump and the people who support him, will still freaking win. The terror of that possibility can sometimes immobilize me, can send me into legitimate panic attacks, especially right before I'm trying to go to sleep at night. But, I try to remind myself that the things we believe in and are fighting for are the *right* & important things. These values are not rooted in hate, but are instead grounded in the belief that all human beings deserve safety, education, homes and healthcare.

We Are Fighting To Make History Now

Things are getting a little dire in here. Drought, fires, pandemics, racism, corruption... Ugh it can all feel so overwhelming. If there is anything our generation has learned, while those before us continue to plunder the environment and perpetuate systems of violence and oppression, there is no great leader or knight coming to save the day. We have to save the day.⁠ And figuring out how to balance my mental health with my commitment to making a difference is a challenge I know I share with many. It doesn't change the fact that it's still down to us. We can do this and we have to do this. You, you capable, strong and brilliant person, *you* are who you have been waiting for.⁠

Fab Feminist PSA Week 8: Voting Rights Are Human Rights⁠ .⁠ All human beings deserve the right to have their say in the laws and regulations of how the community and the country they live in is run.⁠ That includes people who need to mail in their ballot for any reason whatsoever.⁠ That includes people who are incarcerated, or have been incarcerated.⁠ That includes people who are unhoused or experiencing homelessness.⁠ That includes people who are disabled or have disabilities.⁠ That includes people who do not have a drivers license or photo ID.⁠ That includes people who live in low-income communities.⁠ That includes people who cannot take time off work to vote in person.⁠ That includes people of color, immigrants, queer people ...

Feminist PSA Week 7 AKA #yourprivilegeisshowing ⁠⠀ .⁠⠀ I may have screamed 'go fuck yourself' at my phone as I flung it down after a really fucked up session with my-no-longer-therapist after they said the election really doesn't matter and dismissed why I feel unsafe in my community. ⁠⠀ .⁠⠀ Maybe this is one example of how art can be catharsis? IDK.

Courage can look like a lot of different things for all of us. Courage can mean facing your intense anxieties and finally making that phone call, or doing that thing you've been avoiding. Courage can be standing up to the person who harmed you or is harming you. Courage can be telling your story, even when it feels like the whole world demands your silence. Courage can be simply existing in a community where you feel unsafe and unwelcome. Courage can be boldly stating your truths to people you hope will still love you afterwards. Courage can be walking away when it's time. Courage can be sticking in out even when it's hard. Courage is often the path less travelled, the choices less celebrated, the life less acknowledged and seen.

Loving Yourself Is A Revolution

Queers have a special kind of energy, of power, of strength and creativity, vulnerability and expression. With this illustration (the 32nd in my #100daysofqueerwomenandfemmes project) I wanted to celebrate that. Here’s to all the queers with the magic inside them.

Ideas for what to do when you want to understand more about a marginalized experience you do not share: 🌺 Read books, articles and content written by members of the marginalized group 🌺do a google search - there are lots of thoughtful guides for being a better ally / co-conspirator (prioritize those written by members of the marginalized group) 🌺seek out organizers of marginalized groups and follow their social accounts. Be present to learn, but not to take up space. 🌺take time to process your feelings and appropriately notice areas where you have privilege, and where you can work on your own biases .

It's week 2 of my new PSA Series. Here are some resources for understanding why people are tearing down statues, and what you can do to support the removal of these monuments. As of 2016, 1747 Confederate statues are still standing in the United States (though some of them have been tumbling down, lately!!!)
