Howard Johnson's Restaurant
Howard Johnson's 1950's style "Do not disturb" door hanger sign. Howard Johnson, after his great success with his restaurant business, opened his first hotel in 1954. When we were kids on our summer car trip, we loved the restaurants so much, we couldn't wait to stay in the new Howard Johnson's hotel.

Remembering the great A&P grocery store. In the 1950's and 1960's the A&P was synonymous with grocery store. The original name was The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., but we all just called it the A&P.

Remebering the iconic Bonatts Bakery & Restuarant in Harwich Port, Massachusetts. They had delicious jelly donuts, but are best remembered for their melt-a-ways, which were a light horseshoe-shaped danish without the jelly.

For five decades Mildred’s Chowder House was one of the most popular restaurants on Cape Cod. Its chowder is the stuff of legends and countless people still speak of it to this day with adoration. Mildred’s would become a destination for those vacationing on the Cape during the summer. It became commonplace for Mildred’s to serve 900 customers a night. A Cape Cod landmark

Remembering The Skipper restaurant (1921 to 1984) on Steamboat Wharf, Nantucket with this distressed font item. The Skipper was a Nantucket island summer institution, located partly on an old coasting schooner alongside the wharf and partly in a building on the pierside. Such wonderful memories of our family dinners there, feeding seagulls and watching the boats come and go.

Remembering Thompson’s Clam Bar. A Cape Cod summer institution located on Wychmere Harbor in Harwich Port MA. It had 450 seats and served up to 2,000 dinners a night. Such wonderful memories of our family dinners there, feeding seagulls and watching the boats come and go. And of course their famous jingle: “Hey! Where ya goin’? I’m goin’ to Thompson’s Clam Bar. Because that’s where the Tastiest Clams Are!” This is the NEW HIGHER RESOLUTION VERSION.

Remembering Za-rex, also spelled ZaRex. Generations of New Englanders grew up on ZaRex, a sweet fruity syrup they could make into a drink, into snow cones or as a secret ingredient in cupcakes. ZaRex was produced from the early 1900s, ZaRex was sold on opening day at Fenway Park, and Babe Ruth was said to have eaten it on snow cones. Stephen King mentions Zarex in several stories and likely drank it as a kid. Had a great jingle, “It’s as good as can be, just look for the Z.”

Remembering the Christmas Tree Shops, which operated 72 stores in 20 U.S. states, primarily in the Northeast. In 1970, Charles Bilezikian and his wife Doreen opened the first Christmas Tree Shops in Yarmouth Port, MA on Cape Cod. The original location comprised three separate buildings: the Front Shop, the Back Shop and the Barn Shop (which mostly sold penny candy), hence the pluralization of the store's name. The first complex was on Route 6A. In the mid-1990s, Christmas Tree Shops introduced a series of commercials in which the chain's customers were recorded showcasing items they purchased, paired with the soon-to-be famous jingle, "Don't you just love a bargain?"

Remembering the Jordan Marsh Department Store. Jordan Marsh & Company was an American department store chain that was headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts and operated throughout New England. It was founded by Eben Dyer Jordan and Benjamin L. Marsh in 1841. After World War II, the management of Jordan Marsh announced that it would build a new store in downtown Boston. It would take up a full city block. Covering an area larger than Harvard Stadium, it would have two stories under ground; another 14 would rise into the air. It would have all the latest technology, including air conditioning, automatic doorways, block-long show windows, and radiant-heated sidewalks. They advertised it as “New England’s Largest Store.”

In 1979 George Brush and Herbert Putnam partnered with Carly Simon to open the Hot Tin Roof on Martha’s Vineyard. It quickly became a hangout for the SNL crowd, James Taylor’s family and a place where anyone from Keith Richards, Walter Cronkite, John Travolta to Jackie Kennedy Onassis could be spotted. Before they were the Blues Brothers, Belushi and Ackroyd polished their act at the Hot Tin Roof. You’d hear Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Ricky Nelson, Leon Russell, Jesse Colin Young, Martha Reeves, John Popper, Martin Mull, Maria Muldaur, the Roches, and Pat Benatar. Playing The Roof became a box that needed to be checked on many artists’ “I played at” lists. And a must-stop visit for anyone vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard.

Clicquot Club Soft Drinks. The Clicquot Club Company (pronounced "Klee-ko"), also known as Clicquot Club Beverages, was founded in Millis, Massachusetts in 1881 and became one of the largest national beverage companies. It sold Ginger ale and several varieties of soda.. The company was responsible for a number of pioneering moves: In 1893, Clicquot Club was the first to put a metal cap on a bottle; in 1934, the first to sell quart bottles; and in 1938 the company became the first to sell its beverages in a can, at this time known as a "cone-top" can, making it easier to manufacture. After over 80 years of operation, the company was bought by Cott Beverage Corporation in the 1960's and eventually dissolved.
