I had randomly come across an article explaining the discovery of a hermaphrodite cardinal. It’s color was perfectly split down the middle displaying one half with the female’s yellow color while the opposite side was bright red as found in males. I was inspired to recreate this animal oddity in my latest totem piece. It might spread a little light on the fact that nature isn't always black and white when it comes to identity. When the Covid-19 pandemic began, pets were being abandoned all over the world due to city-wide evacuations and/or misguided fears that animals can carry the virus. One day while I was driving down the road with my brother in law, we saw a snapping turtle trying to cross the road. It had almost been hit a handful of times so we pulled over to rescue it. It was challenging trying to move it without getting snapped at but we were successful and got the turtle to the other side with the help of another driver passing by. I created this design in 2018 shortly after Sudan, the last male White Northern Rhino, died. There is one female left of the entire species now. The western black rhino was declared extinct in 2013.
