In ancient Rome, a parade would be thrown to celebrate the return of a victorious military general. The victor wore a crown and was adorned with purple and gold. As the crowds cheered, a deliberately placed slave would whisper "Memento Mori" into his master's ear, "Remember thou art mortal".
