A cross pattée, also known as a cross formy is a type of Christian cross with arms that are narrow at the centre, and often flared in a curve or straight line shape, to be broader at the perimeter.

The famous eight-pointed Maltese cross is of medieval origin. The Maltese Cross is a heraldic cross variant which developed from earlier forms of eight-pointed crosses in the 16th century.

The flag of Malta displays its George Cross. This is a combination of the George cross over the heraldry Maltese which originated from the Cross of the Order of Saint John.
