Black History Month was originally named Negro History Week
by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Woodson chose February
because it marked the birthdays of two men who greatly
influenced the Black American population, Frederick Douglass
and Abraham Lincoln. The Black History Month program of events
is produced by the Black History Month committee consisting of
Northeastern faculty and staff, student groups, and the John D. O’Bryant
African-American Institute staff.
