Irena Sendler is a true heroine in World War II. She risked her life numerous times to get 2,500 Jewish children, and many adults, out of the Warsaw Ghetto before they could be sent to the concentration camps. She was captured by the Nazi Gestapo, but would not reveal any information. In 1965 she was named by Yad Vashem as one of the Righteous Among Nations. In 1980, she joined the Polish Solidarity (Solidarność) movement. Irena Sendler was made an honorary citizen of Israel in 1991.
