One of the world’s largest and most notorious organized criminal networks originated in Japan and is called the yakuza.
Ya-ku-za (ya, or yattsu, means ‘eight’; ku means ‘nine’, and za, or san, means ‘three’).
In the game oicho-kabu, a card value of 893 results in a score of zero which is the worst possible hand and is referred to as yakuza.
The word yakuza literally means ‘good for nothing’ which reflects Japanese feelings toward the syndicate.
