George Henry Thomas was a career U.S. Army Officer and Union General during the American Civil War. Thomas graduated from West Point, served in the Mexican-American War, and remained loyal to the Union despite being born in Virginia. His heroic defense at the Battle of Chickamauga saved the Union Army from a complete route and earned him the nickname "the Rock of Chickamauga".
