Featured in: Close ups in Nature The Anhinga, unlike other diving birds, has no oil on it's feathers and has to dry it's feathers before it can fly again. It is also known as "the snake bird" because it swims with it's body submerged and with only it's long neck and head showing is often mistaken for a snake when seen at a distance.

In 1853 the old Genesee Lighthouse received a new ten-sided iron lantern room and a fourth-order Fresnel lens. A local newspaper reporter thought the $2,000 spent on improvements was a great bargain, remarking that “with an occasional coat of paint or whitewash, it (the tower) can hardly need repairs for one or two hundred years to come.” A new brick keeper’s dwelli...

Featured in: You've Got it, We want it - Everything old is a new Treasure - Preserving History Dedicated to Lenwood "Pete" Adrews 1915-2011. I first met Pete in 2005 when he was 90 years young and at his invitation visited his mill in 2006 when these photos were taken. An old gear with only a few Lignum vitae teeth remaining rest by the window of an old sawmill in Paris Maine. Why wooden teeth you ask? The noise from metal on metal gears would have made an already loud saw mill unbearably loud. The Mill was a casket factory and dates back to the second half of the 17th century and was owned and run by five generations of the Andrews family.
