Wreck of RMS Titanic. This is the bow section of the Titanic, the largest ocean liner of its day. It sank on 15 April 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the northern Atlantic. Over 1500 people died. The ship broke in two as it sank, with the bow and stern sections 600 metres apart. The wreckage was discovered on the seabed in 1985 at a depth of around 3.5 kilometres. This expedition to the wreck took place in June 2004, with this photograph taken by the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Hercules.

Space tourism. Futuristic space tourism poster advertising the delights of a Grand Tour to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The Grand Tour follows the route taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft, launched in 1977, which visited all four outer planets between 1979 and 1989, using gravity assists in its flights past Jupiter and Saturn. This flight plan would be possible every 175 years or so, when the outer planets are suitably aligned.

Wright brothers Kitty Hawk glider. Launch of a test flight of the 1902 glider built and flown on beaches near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, by US aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright. Orville Wright (1871-1948) is piloting the glider. Wilbur Wright (centre, 1867-1912) and local fisherman Daniel Tate are holding the ends of the glider. The Wrights carried out a series of glider tests from 1900 to 1902, prior to their first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (17 December 1903). This glider design includes a rebuilt single vertical rudder. Hundreds of glides took place in 1902, the longest of 190 metres took 26 seconds. Photographed on 10 October 1902.

Operation Crossroads atom bomb test. Mushroom cloud rising from the Baker atomic explosion carried out at Bikini Atoll, in the Pacific, at 21:34 UTC on 24 July 1946 as part of Operation Crossroads. Baker was the first underwater nuclear detonation. The yield was thousands of tons of TNT, with the column of water vapour reaching thousands of metres into the air. The explosion and wave of water overwhelmed and sank unmanned test ships left in the vicinity. These ships are seen across lower centre. This image was obtained around 1.5 seconds after detonation.

Apollo 16 lunar rover. Panoramic image of an astronaut with a lunar rover on the Moon's surface during the Apollo 16 mission. During this mission, astronaut John Watts Young (born 1930) achieved a lunar wheeled vehicle speed record of 18 kilometres per hour. Apollo 16 landed two astronauts in the Descartes Highlands for just under three days, from 21-24 April 1972, the other being US astronaut Charles Duke. Young and Duke carried out three excursions on the lunar surface, and collected over 90 kilograms of lunar rocks.

The 1907 Peking to Paris Race had inspired an even bolder test of these new machines known as automobiles. The course would take racers from New York City to Paris, with a planned 150-mile ship passage from Nome, Alaska, across the Bering Strait to East Cape, Siberia. This was a considerable challenge, to say the least, given the state of automobile technology and the nearly nonexistent road infrastructure at the time. Six cars and 17 men attempted the dangerous journey, but only three of six contestants completed the course. All told, The Great Race of 1908 took 69 days and covered over 13,000 grueling miles of winter roads. In the end, the winner was the American team, driving a 1907 Thomas Flyer.

Operation Doorstep atom bomb test. Image 1 of 2. Mannequins in the living room of a wood-frame house built for atom bomb testing. Two houses were located 1100 and 2300 metres from the blast. During an atomic explosion, non-thermal radiation (gamma rays) is followed by a thermal pulse and then a blast wave. This test took place on 17 March 1953, at the Nevada Test Site, USA, as part of Operation Doorstop. This operation, supervised by the Federal Civil Defense Administration, included experiments to test the effect of an atom bomb on civilian areas.
