The Abbey Mill in the ancient town of Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. It stands on a stretch of the River Avon appropriately called the Mill Avon. Although now residential, the mill started life in about 1190 as the corn mill for the nearby abbey. It is said that the monks excavated the Mill Avon - joining further on with the River Severn - to drive the water wheel. It was then rebuilt in 1793 and had four uindershot wheels - the remains of one still in evidence. It ceased working in 1920.

Pulteney Bridge in Bath, illuminated at twilight and reflecting in the River Avon. Pulteney Bridge, together with the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, is one of the world's most beautiful bridges and surely the most romantic. Like the Ponte Vecchio it is one of a handful of historic bridges in the world with shops built into it. It was built for William Pulteney by Robert Adam in an attempt to connect central Bath to land on the other bank of the River Avon.

A boat on the Mill Avon River at Tewkwsbury, Gloucestershire passing under Quay Bridge. This is a cast iron and sandstone structure dating from 1822 and is now Grade 2 listed. The Mill Avon dates way back to the C12th when Benedictine monks from nearby Tewkesbury Abbey diverted the course of the River Avon to turn the wheel of its water mill. Following the direction the boat is heading, the Avon is navigable all the way to Shakespeare's Stratford where it joins the Stratford on Avon Canal. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The Abbey Mill Weir on the River Avon at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. This is at the end of the navigable section of the Mill Avon, an extension to the River Avon constructed by the Abbey's monks in the C12th. This provided power for the Abbey Mill which at one time apparently had four wheels! The weir as we see it now helps control flood water and ithe sluices are controlled from the white building on the right of the image. The mill itself closed in 1921 and is now private apartments. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre (RST) is a 1,040+ seat thrust stage theatre owned by the Royal Shakespeare Company dedicated to the British playwright and poet William Shakespeare. It is located in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon – Shakespeare's birthplace – in the English Midlands, beside the River Avon. The Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres re-opened in November 2010 after undergoing a major renovation . The Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres are on the western bank of the River Avon, with the adjacent Bancroft Gardens providing a scenic riverside setting. The bridge is built to a design by William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw, based on an earlier design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Anne Hathaway's Cottage (here depicted as a watercolour from an original photograph of mine) was the family home of Anne, William Shakespeare's wife-to-be. Built more than 500 years ago, much of the original survives.
