River Avon, Evesham Number of views as of 1st May 2019 = 475. The historic, market town of Evesham (Worcestershire, England) lies on the River Avon and was founded in the 8th century around an abbey, one of the largest in the country at the time. This shot shows the Workman Bridge crossing the Avon, and is taken from Workman Gardens which adjoin the river. The church by the bridge is Evesham Methodist Church, which was opened in 1907. The River Avon runs from its source near Coventry, through the town of Stratford on Avon (known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare), and the Vale of Evesham, before joining the River Severn near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. The Kennet and Avon Canal as it makes its way westwards out of Newbury in West Berkshire. Here it joins with the River Kennet which at one time provided the water to power the corn and woollen mills along here. Newbury was renowned for its woollen industry and just ahead here is a row of weavers' cottages from the earlier days of cottage industry. The canal was used to transport wool, woollen goods as well as other commodities east to London via the Thames or west to Bath and Bristol.
