Stratford-upon-Avon is a mecca for tourists from around the world draw to view the town that was the birth-place and home of William Shakespeare. This project, part of my WINDOW SHOPPING SERIES, was to look for new, interesting and creative images from Stratford-upon-Avon that are perhaps missed by most tourists.

In the city of Baltimore, there are good guys and there are bad guys. Sometimes you need more than a badge to tell them apart. This highly realistic and totally unvarnished drama series chronicles the vagaries of crime, law enforcement, politics, education and media in Baltimore as it follows a team of cops and the criminals they are after.

A footbridge crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire produced as an impressionist painting. The ramps each side are so that the horses pulling the boats along the canal could cross to the towpath on the opposite bank. The canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. Restored during the late 1900s it was fully re-opened for traffic in 1990.

Just on the Avon very close to where it joins the Severn at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. Just further upstream is the severn-Avon lock which enables boats to travel upriver towards Shakespeare's Stratford. This was a strategic position to b establish this ancient town as the two rivers act as a defensive moat. The River Kennet, here part of the Kennet and Avon Canal, flowing eastwards through the centre of Newbury in Berkshire, England - on its way to join the Thames at Reading. Here it has just passed through the Town Lock and is flowing under the Town, or Water Bridge as it is known. Newbury, now the administrative centre of West Berkshire, was, in medieval times, famous as a centre for making woollen cloth. The K&A canal seen here was finally opened between Reading and Bristol in 1810.

Narrowboats moored along the Kennet and Avon Canal near Woolhampton in West Berkshire. This was captured on a beautifully sunny - if cold - day in mid-January. This section of the waterway is properly called the Kennet Navigation as it is partly river which has been made navigable. The Kennet and Avon waterway, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading.

Formerly an estate owned by the Stirling Family of Falkirk, this 170 acre park comprises woodlands, parkland and the River Avon. At 810 feet long, Avon Aquaduct is the second longest in Britain and lifts the Union Canal 86 feet over the River Avon. The spectacular views from the top make the climb worthwhile. Canal boats - including cruisers and narrowboats moored along the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal just above Aldermaston Lock in Berkshire. This is the view as seen from the towpath. Below the lock is Aldermaston Wharf which was once busy with working boats loading and unloading cargoes of stone, coal, agricultural goods and produce and groceries. Since restoration in the second half of the 1900s and the reopening of the waterway in 1990, most boats are now for leisure or are lived in.

A rather neglected narrow boat sits listing in the water waiting to be restored at the nearby boat yard. Peaceful now, but once this would have been a hive of industry with boats loading and discharging cargoes at the nearby Aldermaston Wharf. The canal, completed in 1810, allowed the smooth transport of goods between Bristol and London via the Thames at Reading.

CA-27 Avon Sabre

Walking along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal near the village of Sulhamstead in West Berkshire in early autumn. Here we approach Tyle Mill Lock from the upsteam side. This canal was constructed to link two rivers, the Thames in the east and Avon in the west, enabling goods to be carried from London to Bristol. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway being built but was restored in the late 1900s and is now a busy leisure waterway.

This lock, no.96, was originally built between 1718 and 1723, supervised by local engineer John Hore of Newbury. It was turf-sided but was rebuilt in brick in 1982-4. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading and the Thames.

The stained glass, rose window, in St. Leonards Church, Charlecote Park, Stratford upon Avon, England. Dedicated to St Leonard, the church stands on the site of an earlier 12th century church, which similar to many others was demolished during the Victorian period. The present church standing on the edge of Charlecote Park was instigated and paid for by Mrs Mary Elizabeth Lucy, whom’s family resided at Charlecote Park. The church contains the Lucy family vault. John Gibson designed the church and Mrs Lucy laid the foundation stone during April 1850. Erected from blocks of ashlar stone, a large rectangular dressed stone with even faces and square edges the church remains much the same as when Mrs Lucy planned it. Much of the woodwor...
