The Dam Is Mine

One of the islands along the River Nile between Aswan and Luxor. The luish green grass on these islands supports cattle which are farmed here. They reach the islands by boat or by swimming. The area immediately on and around the Nile is rich farmland but just a short distance away is inhospitable desert. The Nile has been the lifeblood of Egypt for thousands of years enabling the abcient civilisation to flourish. This image has been given a pastel finish - developed from my original photograph.

It is a member of the Latidae family and is native to most river basins in Africa, including the Nile River Basin. It is a fierce predator that dominates its surroundings, it feeds on fish (including its own species), crustaceans, molluscs, and insects It is a threatened fish due to over harvesting. Its maximum length is 200 cm (about 79 inches) and has a maximum published weight of 200.0 kg (441 pounds).

Cairo, Egypt’s capital, is set on the Nile River. The largest city in the Middle East and the third largest city in Africa. Stunningly beautiful and mysterious city.

It is a member of the Cichlid family and is native to the northern half of Africa and the Levante area, including Palestine, and Lebanon.

The River Nile is more than a highway for river cruise boats - it really is the lifeblood of the valley. The people living in villages along its banks use it daily for washing themselves, their clothes and their household textiles. To the children of course it's a playground too! Much safer these days as since the constuction of the Aswan Dam there are no crocodiles here - they are all below the dam. The photograph has been given a chalk pastel finish.

Looking across the River Nile at the Aswan cataracts - just above the Aswan Dam. Here the river flows through outcrops of hard rock such as granite and was at one time an impediment to river travel at this point. Now boats terminate at Aswan and navigation restarts below the dam. On the hillside is the Aga Khan Mausoleum built to hold the tomb of Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah (1877 - 1957), commissioned by his wife. The image is finished as a pastel drawing

There are other species with this particular name this specie is Citharinus citharus. It is strictly a vegetarian. It can reach a maximum length of 58 cm (about 23 inches) with a maximum published weight of 7 kg (about 15 pounds).

In the novel Death on the Nile, S. S. Karnak is a steamer travelling on the river Nile in Egypt. This boat is the main setting for the novel. Hercule Poirot took a vacation on board the boat, and solved several murders which took place there.

A view of the river Nile, a digital painting based on my photograph. This picture was taken when I was cruising the Nile, between Luxor and Aswan. It was amazing how narrow the fertile strip is along the shores of the river before you find yourself in desert.

Agatha Christie was an English writer known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

The felucca is a traditional wooden lateen-sailed vessel which is common to the eastern Mediterranean area and particularly on the River Nile. Once the main vessel for trading it is now largely used for tourists as a ferry and as a means of exploring the Nile. Feluccas are most usually seen in the stretch of river between Luxor and Aswan - where this image was captured. The picture has been textured to give an impressionist feel. Nikon D200 Nikkor 18-200
