St. Mary's Lighthouse on St. Mary's Island at Whitley Bay on the North East Coast is a popular landmark and visitor attraction. The name St. Mary's Island relates to the light used in a Medieval chapel that was once on the Island. The lighthouse was built in 1898 and was in continual use until 1984.

An instantly recognizable lighthouse on the North East Coast of England, Saint Mary's lighthouse is situated on St. Mary's Island at Whitley Bay. St. Mary's Lighthouse, along with the keeper's cottages on the Island, was built in 1898 on the site of an 11th Century monastic chapel. It became a Grade II listed building in 2012 and the tidal island of St. Mary's is now a popular visitor attraction in Whitley Bay.

Whitley Bay is on the North East coast of England and is not blessed with wall to wall sunshine too often, but this July morning it looked as if it might have been on the Mediterranean coast (with a bit of imagination!). A blizzard came from nowhere of snow and i managed to capture a hardy dog walker at St Marys Lighthouse in whitley bay walking her dog in the snow storm with St Marys lighthouse in the background just visible through the snow blizzard.

They would have been constructed in order to prevent beach erosion or to trap and accumulate sand that would otherwise drift along the beach face and nearshore zone under the influence of waves approaching the beach at an angle.
