This image shows the beach and the sea front at Whitley Bay in North East England, looking north towards St Mary's Island and lighthouse. The early morning August sun is shining on the wet rocks left behind as the tide was going out. There is a similar image available in landscape orientation.

Whitley Bay is on the North East coast of England and is not blessed with wall to wall sunshine too often, but this July morning it looked as if it might have been on the Mediterranean coast (with a bit of imagination!). St Mary's Island and Lighthouse can be spotted through the gap in the sculpture.

Old groins visible at low tide on St. Mary's Island in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear. They would have been constructed in order to prevent beach erosion or to trap and accumulate sand that would otherwise drift along the beach face and nearshore zone under the influence of waves approaching the beach at an angle.
