Don't Blink

Rory Williams was such an awkward character at the beginning of Series 5, but by the end, I wanted to be him, the Last Centurion - the man willing to defend his love whatever the cost, even if it meant guarding her living tomb for 2,000 years.

This is one of my favorite paintings, partly because you don’t have to be a Whovian to appreciate the Victorian portrait of Jenny Flint, a super hero member of the Paternoster Gang. I got the inspiration from a scene in which Jenny was posing for Madame Vastra (Jenny’s wife) who stood at an easel, appearing to paint. Much to Jenny’s dismay, Madame Vastra was actually working on a case instead of painting. I decided that Jenny’s pose shouldn’t go to waste, so I gave her the painting that she deserves. Also, Jenny kicks ass. I freaking love her.

The one who (re)started it all. Dark and moody but also affectionate and empathetic, the 9th Doctor may have had the shortest tenure, but he had a lasting impact.

I have mixed feelings about Danny and Clara’s relationship. I feel like it never developed fully enough on screen. That was my own disappointment with Series 8. Their love story was mostly in bits and mostly off-screen. Still, I liked this image enough to paint it. This was a great scene in Season 9 of Doctor Who when we finally learned why the Doctor has the face of a person he saved long ago. (Peter Capaldi first appeared in Doctor Who in Season 4 during the Fires of Pompeii.) Later in that episode, the Doctor says something that I found particularly apt: "But you see, that's the trouble with viewing reality through technology - it's all too easy to feed in a new reality." I've watched 'The Girl Who Died' a half dozen times in the week after it aired, which isn't unusual for me after every new episode. This quote from the Doctor after they defeated the Mire has been echoing between me ears. Rattling about like pebbles in a dryer. Pretty much sums up the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, and all ...

This is my tribute to Amy and the Doctor. I love their best-friend relationship, as it reminds me of the dynamic I’ve had with my best friend. As you can see, I tried to fit as many references to moments within Amy’s tenure in the Tardis as possible. Rigsy is a character loosely based on Banksy, the famous anonymous graffiti artist. After Clara died in the Season 9 episode, Face the Raven, one of the final scenes was Rigsy walking away from this floral tribute to Clara on the abandoned Tardis, which had been left behind when the Doctor was teleported against his will. The second I saw it, I knew I was going to paint it...because I had to have it on my wall. Now you can have it on your wall.

She was smart. She was strong. She was too often overlooked by the Doctor.

A week before the news broke that John Simm would be appearing in Season 10, I tweeted that I was desperate to see a two-master story with Simm and Gomez. I predicted that the banter would be epic. I also predicted that Missy would kill Simm's Master. I didn't predict that Simm's Master would also kill Missy. Either way, as soon as the news broke, I made this to celebrate the fact that my wish came true. Also, it accurately depicts the Doctor's joy in having to deal with both Masters.
