The Apollo Lunar Module, or simply lunar module (LM, pronounced "lem"), originally designated the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM), was the lander spacecraft that was flown from lunar orbit to the Moon's surface during the U.S. Apollo program. It was the first crewed spacecraft to operate exclusively in the airless vacuum of space, and remains the only crewed vehicle to land anywhere beyond Earth. Structurally and aerodynamically incapable of flight through Earth's atmosphere, the two-stage lunar module was ferried to lunar orbit attached to the Apollo spacecraft command and service module (CSM), about twice its mass.

This mission was the first landing by humans on the Moon, with Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin descending to the surface in the Lunar Module (LM-5, Eagle), while Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command/Service Module (CSM) some 110 kilometres above the surface. This picture was taken from the CSM of the ascent stage of Eagle as Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the CSM on day 6 of the mission (21 July 1969). The two spacecraft docked and the three astronauts returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific on 24 July 1969.

Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the crew that landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours 39 minutes later on July 21 at 02:56 UTC; Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft, and collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Command module pilot Michael Collins flew the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the surface. Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21 hours 31 minutes on the lunar surface at a site they named Tranquility Base before lifting off to rejoin Columbia.
