The Apollo Lunar Module, or simply lunar module (LM, pronounced "lem"), originally designated the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM), was the lander spacecraft that was flown from lunar orbit to the Moon's surface during the U.S. Apollo program. It was the first crewed spacecraft to operate exclusively in the airless vacuum of space, and remains the only crewed vehicle to land anywhere beyond Earth. Structurally and aerodynamically incapable of flight through Earth's atmosphere, the two-stage lunar module was ferried to lunar orbit attached to the Apollo spacecraft command and service module (CSM), about twice its mass.

Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were the first humans to walk on the moon. The landing was televised and viewed by over 530 million people worldwide. The mission was launched on the 16th of July 1969 and landed on the Moon on the 20th of July. The crew splashed down in the Pacific ocean on the 24th of July.

Apollo 11 LM ascent stage in lunar orbit. Earth is at centre, with Mars a red dot at right of the Earth. NASA's Apollo 11 mission to the Moon took place from 16-24 July 1969. This mission was the first landing by humans on the Moon, with Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin descending to the surface in the Lunar Module (LM-5, Eagle), while Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command/Service Module (CSM) some 110 kilometres above the surface. This picture was taken from the CSM of the ascent stage of Eagle as Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the CSM on day 6 of the mission (21 July 1969). The two spacecraft docked and the three astronauts returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific on 24 July 1969.

Apollo programme Saturn V rocket, exploded view. The Saturn V was the launch vehicle for NASA's Apollo programme of manned missions to the Moon between 1968 and 1972. From lower left, the rocket consisted of the first stage, equipped with five F-1 engines and fuel used during take-off.
