The famous Tudor Kings and Queens including the most famous - Henry VIII and Elizabeth I (from 1485 to 1603). (I have not included Lady Jane Grey who only reigned for 9 days). Digital art.

Looking over Granada to the distant mountains from the gardens of the Alhambra Palace in Spain. The Moorish Alhambra or "Red Castle" originates from the 9th century and apparently became a royal palace in the 13th century. It passed into Christian hands when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella conquered Granada in 1492. This was the home of the young Katherine of Aragon before her marriage to Prince Arthur of England and subsequently Prince Henry (later Henry VIII) following Arthur's death.

Each queen of Henry VIII had her own personalized Royal badge - Catherine of Aragon's featured an exotic red Pomegranate

For this block print I have based my design of Tudor style embroidery. Many of the Tudors clothes were embroidered with sweeping vines and floral patterns. Here you can see a small bird perched among a flowering vine. Done in black and white it also reminds me a lot of Tudor style blackwork. I've recreated this bird motif as a hand-carved block print and printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.

French poet André Breton was a co-founder of surrealism and writer of its first manifesto. He was influenced by Dadaism and was one of the inventors of automatic writing, a method that widely opened the door to the subconscious.

Dada or dadaism was an avant-garde movement of the early twentieth century that started in Zürich (Switzerland) but soon spread to New York. By 1920, it was in Paris. Where it engaged such big names as Tsara, Breton, Aragon, Eluard. This design uses a historical photo of the French section of Dada.

Anne Boleyn, c1501 - 1536 CE, was the second wife and queen consort of King Henry VIII of England. She was accused of treason, divorced, and ultimately beheaded becoming in the process one of the most famous queens in all of British history. Upon her marriage to Henry VIII their initials-- an entwined "H" and "A"-- were carved throughout Hampton Court. However, after her fall, these were ordered to be destroyed as Henry VIII strove to remove all traces of his previous wife. Only a few managed to survive-- missed by the workers-- normally in difficult to reach places. I've based my version of Henry and Anne's monogram on one of these overlooked carvings that can still be found in Hampton Court.

The Senyera; meaning "pennon", "standard", "banner", "ensign", or, more generically, "flag" in Catalan) is a vexillological symbol based on the coat of arms of the Crown of Aragon, which consists of four red stripes on a yellow field. This coat of arms, often called bars of Aragon, or simply "the four bars", historically represented the King of the Crown of Aragon. The senyera pattern is currently in the flag of four Spanish autonomous communities (Catalonia, Aragon, the Balearic Isles, the Valencian Community), and is the flag of the historically Catalan-speaking city of Alghero (Catalan: L'Alguer) in Sardinia.
