From a vintage holy card. A beautiful maiden imprisoned in a high tower by her father Dioscorus for disobedience. While there, she was tutored by philosophers, orators and poets. With the help of Origen and Valentinian, she converted to Christianity. Her father denounced her to the local authorities for her faith, and they ordered him to kill her. She escaped, but he caught her, dragged her home by her hair, tortured her, and killed her. He was immediately struck by lightning, or according to some sources, fire from heaven. Her imprisonment led to her association with towers, then the construction and maintenance of them, then to their military uses. Her Memorial is December 4.

Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru to Spanish colonists, and named Isabel Flores de Olivia, she was exceptionally beautiful. From an early age, Rose wanted to become a nun. She often prayed and fasted in secret. St. Rose kept herself cloistered in her room, spending long periods in prayer. It was said she slept only two hours per night so as to have more time for prayer. When she turned 20, she was permitted to join the Third Order of St. Dominic. She continued a life of extreme prayer, fasting and penance. Her feast day is August 23 around the world, although some countries, like Peru, celebrate her on August 30.St. Rose is the patroness of those who suffer ridicule for their piety. and people who suffer family problems.

From a 19th Century Holy Card. A Portuguese mercenary who fought in several wars, sold slaves, and lived hard, John was known to “think with his heart” by acting impulsively. At the age of 40, retired from the army and a book dealer in Granada, he heard a sermon that changed his life. He became as extreme in his dedication to his religious life as he had once been to his life as a soldier. Memorial: March 8. Patron of those with heart diseases, firemen.

The young Clare devoted herself to a life of prayer, penance, and charitable works, deciding to remain a virgin. Hearing of her virtue, Francis talked with her, and on Palm Sunday in 1212, Clare left her family home to join Francis in his way of life. Francis settled Clare and several other noble women who joined her at the Church of San Damiano outside Assisi. Pope Innocent IV approved a Rule Clare had composed, preserving the radical commitment to poverty, to which she clung throughout her life as a religious. Hers was the first such Rule, written by a woman, to be approved by the Church. The sisters are primarily contemplative, devoting themselves to prayer and supporting themselves by the work of their hands.

St. Agnes (purity) is one of seven women in the canon of the Mass with Cecilia, Felicity (happiness), Perpetua (steadfastness), Agatha (goodness), Lucy (light), and Anastasia (resurrection). The canon thereby represents various vocations and three important centers of Western Christianity: Carthage, Sicily and Rome. No saint was more revered in the early Church than this young girl who suffered persecution under the Emperor Diocletian and who, according to her 5th-century acta, was only 13-years-old when she died. The name Agnes in Greek means ‘chaste’ and in Latin signifies a ‘lamb’ (Saint Augustine, Sermon 274). Thus, she represents all that is pure and virtuous in womanhood. San Gennaro

St. Mathilda was the daughter of Theodoric, a Saxon Count. At an early age she was placed in the monastery of Erfurt under the care of Maud, her grandmother, who was Abbess of the monastery which she had entered after the death of her husband. She remained in the convent until her marriage, in 913, to Henry "the Fowler". He Duke in 916 on the death of his father, and in 919 he was chosen to succeeded Conrad as King of Germany. The pious Queen adorned the throne by her many virtues. She visited and comforted the sick and the afflicted, instructed the ignorant, succored prisoners, and endeavored to convert sinners, and her husband concurred with her in her pious undertakings. She died in 968. Memorial: March 14th.

Born to the Italian nobility who grew up in a castle, the son of Ferdinand Gonzaga, a prince in the Holy Roman Emperor. Trained from age four as a soldier and courtier. Served as a page in the Spanish court. He suffered from kidney disease, which he considered a blessing as it left him bed-ridden with time for prayer. While still a boy himself, he taught catechism to poor boys. At age 18, Aloysius signed away his legal claim to his family’s lands and title to his brother, and became a Jesuit novice. Tended plague victims in Rome, Italy in the outbreak of 1591 during which he caught the disease that killed him at age 23. Memorial: June 21
