A late-season snowfall provided a wind-swept coating of fresh snow to everything in its path. Set against a filigreed backdrop, I was struck by a dramatic stand of trees — like proud sentinels guarding their land — whose trunks appear almost as if ‘painted’ by nature. Equally striking are the shadows across the groundcover of snow, cast at sharp angles to the tall, slender trees. Photographed along the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River.

This powerful image is a portrait of a Pwo/Pwevo helmet mask, originally from the Luchazi peoples of Angola. Worn by male dancers during ritual ceremonies, the Pwo/Pwevo mask, symbolizing the female ancestor, is probably the best-known style of face mask of the Luchazi & their Chokwe & Lwena neighbors.

Photographed on a farm near the St. Lawrence River, this horse was watching me as intently as I was watching her :-) I was struck by the feeling of solitude & bleakness with this lone horse set against the backdrop of snow, a charcoal grey sky overhead, & leaning fence posts loosely strung with barbed wire.
