A late-season snowfall provided a wind-swept coating of fresh snow to everything in its path. Set against a filigreed backdrop, I was struck by a dramatic stand of trees — like proud sentinels guarding their land — whose trunks appear almost as if ‘painted’ by nature. Equally striking are the shadows across the groundcover of snow, cast at sharp angles to the tall, slender trees. Photographed along the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River.

Worn by male dancers during ritual ceremonies, the Pwo/Pwevo mask, symbolizing the female ancestor, is probably the best-known style of face mask of the Luchazi & their Chokwe & Lwena neighbors.
