On June 26, 1870, the first section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk opened along the New Jersey beach. Dr. Jonathan Pitney and civil engineer Richard Osborne began developing the area on Absecon Island in 1850. Long before this time though, the Lenni-Lenape tribe were the first seasonal visitors to enjoy the summer splendor of the island. Beautiful beaches, fresh sea air, luxurious hotels, fine restaurants, alluring shops, and a connecting railroad line from Camden, New Jersey drew visitors from all over the world. The Peoria Distillers were a minor league baseball team that existed on-and-off from 1894 to 1917. Jackson Brewing Company was a regional brewery operating in New Orleans, from 1890 to 1974. The brewery was founded by Lawrence Fabacher in 1890 as Jackson Bohemian Brewery; its name was later changed to Jax Beer, and finally Jackson Brewing Company, after Andrew Jackson and Jackson Square. It soon grew to be a prominent regional brewery, and at its height, it was the largest brewery in the south, and was one of two New Orleans breweries to survive Prohibition. Its French Quarter brewery remains a landmark in New Orleans, as after brewing operations ceased, the facility was turned into a mixed use space containing residences, shops, and restaurants.

After originally opening as the McCumbe Brewery, the facility was sold several times until brothers Frederick and Philip Metz purchased it in 1861.Metz was one of the "Big 4" brewers located in Omaha, which also included the Krug, Willow Springs and Storz breweries.

Once upon a time, the beer lovers of the United States were very sad. The government ratified the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, banning all intoxicating liquors, including beer, beginning the period of American history we now know as Prohibition. However, in 1933, Prohibition came to an end. The date was April 7, so now we celebrate New Beer’s Eve each year on April 6! So grab a beer and toast to your ability to drink it!

As far as Albany goes, we do know that Prussian-born Frederick Hinckel and Bavarian-born John Hedrick both opened breweries in Albany in 1852, the earliest Central European immigrant-owned breweries in the city. What we don't know is if those breweries opened as ale breweries or lager breweries. They may have been brewing Bavarian-style Weiss Bier. As the 1850s wore on, circumstantial references to lager brewing in Albany appears, but nothing noting a named brewery. In 1857, Templeton's—a furniture store on Albany's main drag, Broadway, advertised refrigerators for sale. Suitable for, as the ad expresses, "Grocers, Butchers, and Lager Beer purposes."

Elizebeth Friedman (nee Smith, 1892-1980), US cryptologist. Born Elizebeth Smith, she married fellow US cryptologist William Friedman in 1917, having met him at Riverbank Laboratories near Chicago, where they both worked on codes and ciphers. She moved with her husband to Washington DC and worked on cracking the codes of smugglers and drug and alcohol runners during the Prohibition era. She and her husband also published 'The Shakespearean Ciphers Examined' (1957). To commemorate the Friedmans, the National Security Agency's OPS1 building was dedicated as the William and Elizebeth Friedman Building in 2002.
