Tribute to one of the funkiest female bassists

The centre of Weymouth (Dorset, UK) has two main shopping streets. Connecting them to the seafront are several narrow lanes with typical seaside shops and cafes, and a distinctive architecture of 18th century bay windowed buildings which are rather tricky to paint. I've painted this in oil on a 12x16 board, taking a week or so from start to finish.

The river Wey starts off as just a trickle of a stream just a few miles North of Weymouth (Dorset, UK), but by the time it nears the sea its wide enough for a marina, and this section of the old harbour that straddles the river on its last leg to the sea. By day the scene is a hotch-potch of old buildings, but by evening light, the street lights and reflections make it even more magical. Painted in oil on a 16x12 inch board, based on photos I took at dusk in late November.

From an original acrylic work, this shows the harbour in Weymouth and conjures up the unique vibe of a busy coastal holiday town in UK. This was painted from an original photograph taken on vacation in 2007 but some things never change and Weymouth is one of them. Originals of my work are now in collections in UK, America and Europe.

On a hot sunny day the beach at Weymouth (Dorset, UK) is crowded. But this day was windy - the kind of day where the sand blew across the beach, stinging exposed legs. Despite this a few people ventured out, watching the yachts racing around the bay - the site of the 2012 Olympic yachting event. I've painted this view in oil on board 20x8 inches in size I'll be painting some more Weymouth pictures in coming months as I put together a trail around the town similar to ones I've done for Romsey, Salisbury and St Ives - see my website for details - www.richardpaulart.co.uk

Evening in Weymouth Number of views as of 8th October 2018 = 1210. Probably my favourite view of Weymouth harbour, facing east towards the harbour entrance, taken from the lifting bridge, with the sun slowly sinking behind the camera. Location: Weymouth, Dorset, England (venue for the 2012 Olympic Sailing events). In days gone by, Weymouth and the surrounding coastline had a history of smuggling, though it was also the centre of preventive operations for the area. Date: 10th May 2008. Brewers Quay is in the heart of the old, historic part of Weymouth. Its dominated by the old brewery building, which in recent years became a shopping place, but has since lain empty. Even the letters on the building are dropping off! The quayside in front remains a popular tourist haunt, with plenty of nautical interest. Here I've focused on the diesel fuel station for boats. Painted in oil on a 12x16 inch board.

Weymouth Rover Number of views as of 4th March 2018 = 875. A rather fine classic car, pictured on Weymouth promenade (Dorset, England), believed to be a 1948 Rover 12 Sports Tourer. Rover 12 production began in 1905 and continued until the late 1940s, with several 'updates' along the way and gaps in production during the war years. I spotted this scene when I was in Weymouth (Dorset, UK) last year - a man making repairs to some fishing gear, beside his boat, at the quayside. Having found a nice way to frame the scene I've now painted this in oil on a 12x12 inch board - one of hopefully a series of people working in interesting jobs.

Talking Heads were an American rock band formed in 1975 in Providence, Rhode Island as the Artistics and changed their name to Talking Heads when they moved to New York City and were active until 1991.

The Hilltop Steakhouse was a chain of restaurants in Eastern Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire that existed from 1961 to 2013. The original location opened in Saugus, Massachusetts in 1961, and operated until 2013. In a hilltop location with a giant saguaro cactus sign, the restaurant was a landmark on Route 1 north of Boston. The last restaurant existed only as a butcher shop in Weymouth. The other locations with Hilltop restaurants were Hartford, Nashua, Braintree, and Springfield. Who can forget the 60 foot neon cactus sign? Great gift for Bostonians, New Englanders and Steak lovers.
