Large Kiwi print designed with koru. The koru (Māori for loop) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos. I drew this for a mural a few years ago, thanks to society6 it is getting a new lease on life. Tauhou is a small bird that lives in the New Zealand forest. The European Name is Silvereye or Wax-eye. The bird in this print is drawn incorporating Maori Koru patterns. The koru (Māori for “loop”) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. This design started life as a stencil which I made for a New Zealand birds mural. The mural is long gone but I still had the stencils. I redrew them, using vector, to create a series of bird designs. Others in this series are KIWI, TAKAHE, FANTAIL, TOMTIT and the ROCK WREN.

Fantails, also know by the Maori name Piwakawaka, are wonderful birds, friendly, active and agile. The birds in this print are drawn incorporating Maori Koru patterns. The koru (Māori for “loop”) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. The tones of brown and white are inspired by the true colours of the fantail.

This is my fun take on a popular wooden bee toy that nearly all New Zealand ( Kiwi ) children have when they are growing up. I have replaced the bees face with a stylized Hei Tiki design. Hei Tiki is an iconic Maori design. This bee toy is pulled along the floor by a string. As the wheels turn the wings spin.

The Takahe is a flightless bird which is indigenous to New Zealand. For 50 years the South Island Takahe was thought to be extinct, luckily that was wrong. If you have the time it is a great story of discovery, well worth googling. The North Island Takahe is extinct. This design uses Koru patterns. The koru (Māori for “loop” is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. The colours are, purple-blue, greenish and brown. I also have this design for sale with the text Aotearoa, rather than New Zealand.

Fantail, a native bird of New Zealand, called Piwakawaka in Maori. I have drawn this using Koru designs based on unfurling fern fronds. This vector design is bold and simple. 2 shades of brown, and on some products, an earthy, light brown background.

Chur Bro is a very common slang term in New Zealand / Aotearoa. It means thank you or that’s nice. The text reads 100% chur New Zealand. This is a play on 100% pure. The text is written in Maori style, Kowahaiwhai patterns using traditional colours (white, red and black).
