The Tomtit (Petroica macrocephala) is a small bird which is endemic to New Zealand. It’s Maori name is Miromiro. This design features a stylised Tomtit, drawn in red, it has Koru designs on its body. The design in inspired by an airforce roundel.

Tauhou is a small bird that lives in the New Zealand forest. The European Name is Silvereye or Wax-eye. The bird in this print is drawn incorporating Maori Koru patterns. The koru (Māori for “loop”) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. This design started life as a stencil which I made for a New Zealand birds mural. The mural is long gone but I still had the stencils. I redrew them, using vector, to create a series of bird designs. Others in this series are KIWI, TAKAHE, FANTAIL, TOMTIT and the ROCK WREN.

This is my fun take on a popular wooden bee toy that nearly all New Zealand ( Kiwi ) children have when they are growing up. I have replaced the bees face with a stylized Hei Tiki design. Hei Tiki is an iconic Maori design. This bee toy is pulled along the floor by a string. As the wheels turn the wings spin.

The Takahe is a flightless bird which is indigenous to New Zealand. For 50 years the South Island Takahe was thought to be extinct, luckily that was wrong. If you have the time it is a great story of discovery, well worth googling. The North Island Takahe is extinct. This design uses Koru patterns.
