Squirrels are members of the family Sciuridae, a family that includes small or medium-size rodents. The squirrel family includes tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots (including woodchucks), flying squirrels, and prairie dogs amongst other rodents. Squirrels are indigenous to the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa, and were introduced by humans to Australia.The earliest known squirrels date from the Eocene period and are most closely related to the mountain beaver and to the dormouse among other living rodent families.

The ground squirrel is a small rodent that lives in burrows in the ground. It is also commonly referred to as a gopher or a prairie dog. Ground squirrels are found throughout most of North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. They can range in size from 9 to 12 inches in length and weigh between 4 and 8 ounces. They have short fur that is usually gray or brown in color and white bellies. Ground squirrels feed primarily on seeds, nuts, and fruits, but they will also eat insects, small reptiles, and carrion. They are diurnal and are active during the day.

The first 'inhabitants' to greet us in the parking lot, Columbian Ground Squirrels are some of the most entertaining wildlife at Manning Provincial Park. What I am tickled to call "the Prairie Dogs of the West" were positioned near their network of holes in the ground (or in rotted tree stumps) and often called in an upright position like meerkats or groundhogs (when they weren't chasing or kissing each other). We found plenty at Manning Park Resort and Lightning Lake, staked out near picnic tables and people lounging in the grass. Columbian Ground Squirrels spend the short summer bulking up on fat reserves for their hibernation period, which lasts for seven months!
