Cocoa Beach was much, much edgier and zoomier in the late 50’s and throughout the 1960’s. Sure, there were hotels, restaurants, beaches, and bars (they called them lounges) back then just like now. But what they had 55 years ago was the raw excitement of the space program, engineers and space workers working crazy hours, and of course, the original seven astronauts roaring through Cocoa Beach in their Jim Rathman supplied Corvettes.

The Royal Hotel at 619 Merchant Street (the corner of Merchant Street and Brooking Street) was built in 1905. It was once one the three top hotels in the city, together with the Strand and Minto Mansions and prided itself on being the "most modern", with the first electric lift of any hotel. The handsome restaurant downstairs was the scene of many historic meetings. The original owner, JW Darwood, also built the Strand Hotel (text by Lost Footsteps).
