Seen here as a year-at-a-glance poster calendar is this intimate portrait of sensual red poppy blossoms. Photographed in early summer in a garden near the shoreline of Lake Ontario (one of the Great Lakes).

This powerful image is a portrait of a Pwo/Pwevo helmet mask, originally from the Luchazi peoples of Angola. Worn by male dancers during ritual ceremonies, the Pwo/Pwevo mask, symbolizing the female ancestor, is probably the best-known style of face mask of the Luchazi & their Chokwe & Lwena neighbors.

A mid-winter thaw set the stage for a series of images of a wooded area where the carpet of snow had melted, leaving the base of the tree trunks submerged in water not yet absorbed by the frozen soil. Capturing a serene, early evening scene in autumn, "Bay Watch" puts the spotlight on the mirror-like surface of a small bay that eventually empties into Lake Ontario (one of the Great Lakes). A small jetty is home to a couple of trees & tall grasses whose reflections appear in the calm water in the foreground, along with those of the softly-hued, mauve-tinged sky overhead. Further in the distance, a larger grouping of trees is also reflected in the water.

A bit of digital magic has transformed a daylight image of a defoliated tree in winter into an evocative, seemingly nocturnal, high-contrast image.

Following a late afternoon rain, a bank of thick fog had settled in accompanied by a strange glow in the sky... Adding to the mystery of this scene were these grand, old & as yet leafless trees, silhouetted by the sun bravely attempting to break through the heavy fog.

This spring, I was fortunate to again come across clusters of magnificent fungi, sprouting from the trunks of a small stand of dead trees. Illuminated by late afternoon sunlight, this stunning, sensuous specimen juts prominently outward, perpendicularly to the tree to which it has attached itself. Its curvy, overhanging lip is beautifully speckled.
