Standing under Reading Bridge which spans the River Thames, looking towards the northern, Caversham bank. This is a concrete single-span bridge connecting the town of Reading in Berkshire with Caversham. Originally there was just one bridge in the town - Caversham Bridge, - just further upstream. Caversham bridge, built in 1926, spanning the River Thames at Reading in Berkshire, England. It connects Reading with Caversham on the river's north bank. There has been a bridge here since the 1100s and in 1231 it is mentioned by Henry III who notes the presence of a chapel on the bridge on the side owned by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. This is the scene just downstream from Caversham Bridge (in the background) linking the town centre of Reading with Caversham on the north bank. Houses, flats, offices and a few restaurants line the riverbanks here. The Thames was once the main route into Reading - particularly in medieval times when the large and powerful Reading Abbey was the centre of life and commerce. Now it's busy with leisure craft. The footbridge, named Christchurch Bridge as the result of a poll, links Caversham to the north with Reading and in particular the station on the south bank. The name reflects historic links with Christchurch Cathedral in Oxford. The bridge was opened in 2017 by the Mayor of Reading with an inaugural game of poohsticks!

Just upstream from Caversham Bridge, swans regularly gather in the hope of food - which is always forthcoming! The bridge spans the River Thames linking Reading and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present bridge dates from 1926. Swans and geese are a feature here as they gather by the Reading Rowing Club boathouse

The footpath crossing the River Kennet at Hissey Bridge near Burghfield, Berkshire, England. Here the towpath crosses the river to the south bank to continue westwards towards Theale. The bridge itself rises over the river as a wooden arch topped with a railing. The Kennet forms part of the 87 mile long Kennet and Avon Canal, constructed between 1794 and 1810 to enable goods - especially Bath Stone - to be carried by boat between Bristol and London via Reading.

During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge added. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present stone and concrete bridge dates from 1926. To create this image my original photograph has been given an oil pastel finish.

An old brick railway bridge spanning the River Kennet at Reading, Berkshire. This is very near the mouth of the Kennet where it joins the River Thames. The bridge carries the line from Reading to Waterloo. The area here is Kennetside - in the past an industrial area of the town. Just further along and under the bridge is the old gasworks and a bit further still takes us to where Huntley and Palmers once made their biscuits.

Because regular curses just don't feel right anymore.
