This pattern depicts the fossils of the famous Burgess Shale. Many of the remarkable lifeforms of the Cambrian explosion are depicted, including: opabinia, wiwaxia, pikaia, and hallucigenia.

A digital painterly of Hartland quay cliffs, Devon ,Uk were pushed up when two continents collided to give the cliffs this rock formation. Lovely shale and sandstone cliffs giving textures and patterns along the cliff.

I loved this relic of the railway at Newnes seen on a trip to Wollemi National Park a few years ago. Photographed with a Canon 400D at Wollemi National Park, NSW, Australia. Newnes, an abandoned oil shale mining site of the Wolgan Valley, is located in the Central Tablelands region of New South Wales, Australia. The site that was operational in the early 20th century is now partly surrounded by Wollemi National Park. The settlement was originally built by the Commonwealth Oil Corporation. Bionic anomalocaridids! There are two of each species of anomalocaridid, including Anomalocaris, Laggania (or Peyotia), Schinderhannes and Amplectobelua. Hopefully I’ve got all of those right, I haven’t checked them so they might not be. The colours were based mainly on nudibranches, although the two Hurdia (the ones with the shell thing coming out of their faces) were based on crabs and the Anomalocaris in the foreground was based on a mantis shrimp

I feel strongly about the negative consequences of "Fracking" and the recent Dark side of Science, comp, spurred me to complete a sketch I had done a while ago. What the Frack, hopefully gets the message across and it also gave me a chance to draw some more teeth. :)

The sea washed rock formation at Hartland Quay, Devon, United Kingdom. The wet rock formation bringing out the colours in the shale and mudstone with it giving the effect of gold leaf in the rocks.

Anomalocaris was among the first of the great apex predators to swim the Earth's oceans. Though it was not overly large by present standards, back in the Cambrian Period it was a giant! Fossils of this famous animal have been found in rock formations throughout the world, most notably the Burgess Shale.
