A view of the River Derwent looking downstream as it flows through Cockermouth in Cumbria. To the right can be seen the point at which the River Cocker joins the Derwent - hence the name 'Cockermouth'. Also in this view are the Jennings Brewery buildings which have been on this site since 1874. The River Dewent itself rises near Scafell Pike at Sprinkling Tarn and then flows through Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake before flowing through Cockermouth and thence to the Irish Sea at Workington. Glover was born in Houghton-on-Hill, Leicestershire, England, and initially trained as a painter in London. He gained recognition for his landscape paintings, which often depicted the picturesque English countryside. In 1805, at the age of 38, Glover decided to seek new artistic opportunities and immigrated to Australia with his wife and family.

The partly frozen Derwent Reservoir, located in County Durham, close to the border of Northumberland and the villages of Edmunbyers and Blanchlands in the respective counties.
