Sailing Barge T-Shirts

In the background are the hills of the Isle of Wight with yachts and a car ferry. These barges are more commonly seen in the Thames estuary and East Anglia area where they were once the local freight carriers.

The River Thames sailing barge is a type of commercial sailing boat once common on the River Thames in London. The flat-bottomed barges with a shallow draught and leeboards, were perfectly adapted to the Thames Estuary, with its shallow waters and narrow tributary rivers.

A Thames sailing barge of the type once common around the Thames estuary and England's East Coast. Being flat bottomed with a shallow draft of only two and a half feet they could sail into the creeks and inlets around the Thames estuary to carry goods. The collapsible main mast allowed them to sail under bridges.They were also very stable and possessed cargo space above and below deck.

A Thames sailing barge at the quayside in Woodbridge, Suffolk. These barges were once a common sight along the Thames estuary and the east coast of England. Being flat-bottomed and with a shallow draught they could negotiate the shallower areas of the Thames, its estuary and the tributary rivers. Woodbridge is a picturesque town on the River Deben in Suffolk. The quay area is full of photographic opportunities and in the background here is the old weatherboarded tide mill. Founded in 1935, Harbor Tug & Barge Company was one of San Francisco Bay's first dedicated tugboat operators. In business for over half a century, at its peak, Harbor Tug maintained a fleet of 15 high-powered tugboats, and over 70 barges. Aside from guiding freighters in and out of the bay, Harbor Tug's barges were used for everything from waterfront construction and demolition projects, to the haulage of bulk materials and garbage.
