This December morning didn't seem to know what the day would hold with almost black clouds over the calm sea and golden dawn reflecting in the wet sand. The image was taken from the beach at Blyth in Northumberland looking out towards St Mary's Island and Lighthouse on the horizon

The Rendezvous Cafe is an iconic art deco style cafe and ice cream shop on the promenade at Whitley Bay, North Tyneside on the North East coast of England. The building was designed and erected in 1930 as the Garden Restaurant and re-named The Rendezvous Cafe in 1957. It has been featured in a prime time advert for BP and more recently has been used in the filming of the TV crime drama 'Vera'.

Old groins visible at low tide on St. Mary's Island in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear. They would have been constructed in order to prevent beach erosion or to trap and accumulate sand that would otherwise drift along the beach face and nearshore zone under the influence of waves approaching the beach at an angle.

Whitley Bay is on the North East coast of England and is not blessed with wall to wall sunshine too often, but this July morning it looked as if it might have been on the Mediterranean coast (with a bit of imagination!). St Mary's Island and Lighthouse can be spotted through the gap in the sculpture.

A stormy January morning looking out over the North Sea from Blyth beach in Northumberland. The offshore wind was whipping up the waves and the spray, together with light drizzle made for a miserable experience which seemed to suit itself to a black and white conversion.
