St. Mary's Lighthouse on St. Mary's Island at Whitley Bay on the North East Coast is a popular landmark and visitor attraction. The name St. Mary's Island relates to the light used in a Medieval chapel that was once on the Island. The lighthouse was built in 1898 and was in continual use until 1984.
