Canal Basin Tank Tops

A digital art image of the canal basin at Brecon in Powys, South Wales. Here the Monmouth and Brecon Canal reaches its northernmost limit after winding through the Brecon Beacons. The canal was constructed to link Brecon with the docks at Newport, the narrow boats carrying coal, iron and limestone. A system of tramways linked the canal to the mines and quarries. It is currently navigable between Brecon and Pontymoile, with plans in place to extend this to Newport.

Exeter Canal The Exeter Ship Canal (Exeter, Devon, England), first completed in the 1560s, is one of the oldest man-made waterways in Britain. It was constructed to bypass weirs that had been built across the River Exe to prevent boats reaching the city, instead forcing them to unload at Topsham, from where the Earls of Devon would charge high tolls for transporting goods into the city. The canal was last used commercially in 1972, but it is still widely used for leisure purposes, and the city basin is being included as part of a £24 million redevelopment scheme. The city, situated on the River Severn was founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD and was the UK's most inland shipping port, vital for the transfer of goods and raw materials to and from Britain's once booming manufacturing heartland.
