Ribblehead Viaduct Tank Tops

The Ribblehead Viaduct - a spectacular example of Victorian engineering crossing Batty Moss in the Ribble Valley, North Yorkshire carrying the Settle-Carlisle line. The amazing construction was designed by the Midland Railway's Chief Engineer, John Sydney Crossley. The last stone was laid by the end of 1874, and on 1st May 1876 the whole line opened for passenger traffic. The construction used a workforce of 2300 men of which over 100 unfortunately lost their lives.

The Ribblehead Viaduct or Batty Moss Viaduct carries the Settle-Carlisle Railway across Batty Moss in the valley of the River Ribble at Ribblehead, in North Yorkshire, England. The viaduct, built by the Midland Railway, is 28 miles (45 km) north-west of Skipton and 26 miles (42 km) south-east of Kendal. It is a Grade II* listed structure. The land underneath and around the viaduct, where the remains of the construction camp and navvy settlements known as Batty Wife Hole, Sebastopol and Belgravia were located, is a scheduled ancient monument. Ribblehead viaduct is probably the most famous of the many feats of Victorian engineering along the stunning Settle to Carlisle railway line. Its iconic location in the middle of the Three Peaks makes it a popular photo stop. There are a number of laybys, a tea wagon and the popular Station Inn.
