An illustration of the Krakatoa volcanic system in the months before the cataclysmic eruption on August 26, 1883. In this time period intermittent volcanic activity was observed at all three of the main vents, Perboewatan, Danan, and Rakata. The volcanic island illustrated here was ultimately destroyed by the paroxysmal eruption that culminated in caldera collapse.

This Ediacaran fossil is one of the oldest lifeforms on Earth, existing prior to the Cambrian explosion. Despite the similarity of their leaf-like segments to modern plants, these animals were likely filter feeders as they lived below the photic zone in ancient oceans. This is a stylistic rendering, the actual coloration of charnias are up for debate!

Oceanic crust is produced from basaltic magmas at the divergent plate boundary of the Mid-Ocean Ridge (left) and are transported along the conveyer belt of seafloor spreading to a subduction zone, where the dense slab of mafic crust subducts under the relatively buoyant continent! At the point of contact between the two tectonic plates an accretionary wedge is formed alongside an oceanic trench. This painting was based off a photo I took through a telescope lens of the moon during an astronomy class. The texture and craters present on the surface was incredible, and I was trying to capture some of that beauty!

This beloved arthropod evolved around the Ordovician Period and has virtually remained unchanged during last 480 million years. This living fossil is recognized by its segmented body, compound eyes, and stiff tail that helps turn it right side up again when turned over.

This cross-section shows the layers of the Earth looking at the materials of each layer, instead of looking at it as a heat map. The big difference here is the mantle, which is made of peridotite, a rock that is often bright green! Convection cells are drawn in to show the movement of material within the mantle, a process that occurs over incredibly long timescales. The outer and inner core are both made of iron and nickel alloys, while the inner core is solid and likely has Widmanstätten patterns, similar to those seen in meteorites. I made this diagram because I feel like a lot of people don’t know what the interior of this planet looks like.

This is a depiction of the fossil hallucigenia, a Cambrian era ancestor of today’s velvet worms. Hallucigenia fossils were originally discovered in the Burgess Shale, a famous Cambrian-age fossil deposit in the Canadian Rockies. Paleontologists have been very confused about how to classify this lovely little worm as it was unclear whether it’s protective spikes were legs or it’s wobbly legs were tentacles!
